Interview with Azal

Firstly I would like to congratulate you on your success of your debut song “Aisi Taisi.” How do you feel about this achieving this in such a short time?
To be honest, we weren’t expecting such a huge response after the release of the song. But that doesn’t mean that we weren’t confident in our song. It feels good looking at our song topping three major music charts on the Musik, AAG and MTV Pakistan. Also, looking at the hit figures on our site, which have exceeded more than 130,000 hits, is a great feeling. Our video is being viewed on YouTube a lot as well. The release has been massively appreciated by the public.
Doesn’t Azal qualify as a “one-hit wonder” since no other songs have been released as yet?
No, I won’t say that. We have other songs lined up for release as well. We are waiting to get responses on them and only then you can tag the band with a label such as “one-hit wonder”.
What is the concept of “Aisi Taisi”? Why did you choose it as a debut release?

Firstly it is a commercial song, the chances for it to gain acceptance were higher. The theme that it has is leveled into three parts.

First Phase:
It is the mindset of the youth of Pakistan, in which an individual sets out to do something in his/her life, has ideas, motivation, and what he/she requires is a guideline, a path. The majority requires that. It basically defines the mindset.

Second Phase:
When he/she sets out, he/she faces social and political issues that oppress or depress him/her. Majority of the youth faces such problems. This leads that individual to fall into the web of frustration and makes him react in positive or negative ways. Our message directs an individual to lead life in a positive way, by looking for alternate ways to achieve one’s goal and therefore “Aisi ke Taisi”, bring it on. This part of the song gives a message and creates awareness to support such individuals for these individuals will help improve the system in the future of our nation.

Third Phase:
Talking about the system, there is law in Pakistan, but there’s no implementation. The system that people follow is more like being slaves and following blindly what’s imposed on them. We condemn the system of convenience implemented by the “bureau” or the upper class of Pakistan, where tasks are done through means of corruption, sources, bribery etc.

This song is not made to exude a rebellious image of a rock band. A whole thought process was coherently created in writing the lyrics, composing the song and then working out the video for the song’s launch.

Who did the whole composition and production of the song and the other songs in the album?
It’s a team work. From composition to lyrics to production to everything, it’s the whole band’s effort.
Azal is a different name for a band to have, what does it mean?
It is a Persian word, which means time before time or the beginning of a beginning- the time when the universe was not made.
Forming a band is your first experience of its kind?
All of us were actually working on different projects but to come as one with Azal is our first experience.
Who is the Brain child of the band?
There is this production house called Nucleus in Karachi where previously ET used to work as a head of post production and visual site and I used to handle the sound production. So ET used to hang out with me a lot and then came Rajab once, as a client to record his album. We started his project and later we realized that we gelled so well with each other that we all decided to do a project together and formed Azal. So yes, I would say that it was all three of us who equally formed the band.
Through out the years many bands came, lightened up the market and left, or broke up to dishearten the following. How promising is Azal for us all?
I’d say those bands that break up or leave the market are not at a very professional age. At our age, the approach towards your work becomes very practical and professional. Also with the plethora of experiences we’ve had together, we always discuss things in a practical way before executing any of our plans or decisions for the band.
Speaking of experiences, you’ve grown into becoming a very good musician, had you ever had any sort of training for it?

According to me, you cannot develop an artist in someone. You can polish the skills of an artist but you cannot tell someone to become an artist.

But as there were no such institutions for art back in the time the artist inside me was to be nurtured, so I learnt it all by myself. You can say self training plays a major role in becoming a good musician.

Having contractual agreement with India Times with your debut album, how do you feel about the achievement by the Indian Market?
Right now, we’ve been accepted by the Indian industry and not the market/public. It hasn’t released as yet in the market, so that’s totally a different issue. But having received such a response from a huge record label is no doubt a privilege, and we really appreciate their support.
20th March is Dubai Desi Rock 2008- one of the biggest concerts of this year. Azal is one of the main attractions in the event. The concert happens to be your first ever live performance, that too internationally. Is Azal ready?
Yes, this is going to be our first event and fortunately for us, it’s an international one too. On the same date our debut album would be launched in America and Canada by Sangeet Records.
Is Azal prepared for a live act?

Of course. We’ve done our bit of live acts in different projects and now will be doing it with our own project. We are jamming a good deal before the concert so we could rock the crowd in the event.

Future plans?

We will be releasing our new songs and videos in the end of March and April. Like others we all have plans but it’s the implementation part that all of us are working on. Just looking for the right time and you’ll see us rocking the charts again very soon.

This is just the beginning: the entertainment doesn’t stop here.

Regarding your managerial part of the band…

Yes, Ali Imran is handling our band; a young talented individual who took interest in the band- has been working throughout towards its success. He handles everything you think of about the band- from song recordings to album deals to concert deals etc. He’s the perfect man for this job.
